7 Ideas for Unique Halloween Costumes

By Allison Tursi, Holbrook Macaroni KID Publisher Mom October 13, 2022

Halloween is always so much fun for kids, the candy, the costumes, the parties, the scare. Every child has a dream of who they want to be, a superhero, their favorite character, or something totally unique. DIY Halloween costumes and fun family costumes are something that have been a part of my life for several years. They may take a little time and a lot of creativity, but, they also include love and memories to always remember! Here are some of the fun idea's I have put together over the years.

Who Ya Gonna Call? Ghostbusters!

When my daughter was 6 months old we went with the classic ghost costume. A simple onesie with a felt face and a black & white tutu! What's a ghost without ghostbusters? We bought these Ghostbuster costumes to complete our family costume.

Do you know Boo?

In 2016 my daughters pigtails were perfect to create these Monsters Inc family costumes. Mine and my husband's onesies were bought to go with my daughters, but her costume was completely home made! Made with some fabric, stuffing, a mop, clothes, and some eyeballs (and love) I recreated Boo's outfit as well as her monster disguise!

E.T. Phone Home

The perfect costume for a tot that is joining the trick-or-treating fun, but not quite ready to walk and keep up with the group. With our push trike I attached a basket with E.T. and 'Elliot' rocked his classic red sweatshirt and jeans. He was ready to take his ride just like Elliot and E.T. did in the movie!

Superheroes to the Rescue

Superheroes are common halloween costumes, but here I introduce you to the DIY Clark Kent and Batgirl. All mini Clark Kent needed to rock his costume was a Superman shirt, jeans, button up, a tie, and of course a pair of glasses! Batgirl wore a spandex suit, some yellow fabric to create boots, cuffs, and a belt, plus a few bat symbols, a mask, and cape.

T.E.A.M. Let's Go Team!

Everything you need for football from our family of five! The coach, the referee, the cheerleader, the player, and the football. These costumes were not bulky or uncomfortable, they were easy for everyone to wear and, a bonus- warm for my youngest!

The Incredibles

With a family of 5, how could we not be the Incredibles? Store bought costumes for the kids and simple t-shirts for me and the hubby. We had to jump on the opportunity to clone this incredible family when the kids were the perfect age!

Mr. Snuffleupagus

This year my son asked to be 'Snuffy' for halloween. Knowing how much he loves Snuffy and that there is no costume on the market, I knew I would be once again crafting this DIY costume. I created Snuffy with 2 onesies, a hat, and big eyes complete with those large eyelashes. My son is so in love with his costume loves wearing it- plus its nice a warm!
