Games For Your Family on Family Game Night

Our Favorite Games to Play as a Family

By Allison Tursi, Holbrook Macaroni Kid Publisher Mom May 28, 2021

My family loves to play games. The kids are constantly asking to play their favorite games with us and after the kids go to bed, my husband and I sometimes play games ourselves (it's a nice break from our binge watching). Playing games together is a great way to bond as a family, learn, and have fun!

Here are a few suggestions from the games we love to play:

SKIP-BO- Get rid of your pile by discarding cards in number order. A favorite for my husband and I. A little harder for young kids to play, suggest age is 8+.

Old Maid- Play the game by picking from each others hand to make pairs, but don't be the last to be holding the old maid! My 4 & 6 year olds love this game and play it independently.

Monopoly Deal- A fun way to play Monopoly (in about 15 minutes!) A little harder for young kids to play, suggest age is 8+.

Phase 10- Play from phase 1 to phase 10 by completing the required set. A little harder for young kids to play, suggest age is 8+.

UNO- A family favorite (and a classic) get rid of your cards by matching the color or number on the pile. Easy enough for my 4 and 6 year old to play and they both love it!

UNO FLIP- A twist to Uno by having a whole new set of numbers and action cards on the other side of the card. Easy enough for my 4 and 6 year old to play and they both love it!

Jumping Jack- Take turns pulling out carrots until the bunny pops up and try and catch him to win! Really easy for young kids to play.

Jenga- Classic game of Jenga, take turns pulling out pieces and placing them on top, but don't knock it over! My son was enjoying this game with us since he was 3 years old.

Pop! the Pig- Feed the pig hamburgers and pump him up with the number under the burger, but don't be the one to make him pop! Easy enough for a 3 year old to play with help.

Leaping Letters- The game of Perfection with the alphabet. Fun game to play with the addition of learning!

Buddy's Balloon Launch- Roll the die to see how many times to pump up the balloon, but don't get caught being the one to make the balloon fly away! Really easy for young kids to play.

Memory Match- A great game to play with kids and work on those memory skills! My kids have been playing since they were 3.

Zingo!- Reveal 2 pieces at a time and be the first to grab the picture to match to your board if you need it. Be the first to fill your card to win! My son was able to play this game when he was 3.

Candy Land- The classic game of Candy Land, move to colored spots on the board to try and make it to the end. My kids play this independently together at ages 4 & 6.

Chutes and Ladders- Another classic board game we love. Move you piece across the board, up the ladders and down the slides to try and get to the end. My 4 & 6 year olds are able to play this game.

Guess Who- Take turns asking yes/no questions about the characters to try and guess who your opponent has. My 4 year old needs a little assistance coming up with some questions and putting down the correct people but he still loves plays.

BeanBoozled- Do you like jelly beans? Well, some of these are good and some of these are awful! Take a chance and hope you bite into the right one. My sides LOVE this game, it's definitely a game for a good laugh.

Speak Out!- Try to get your team to guess what you are saying all while your mouth piece holds your mouth open! Definitely a funny game to play together! Games listed suggested age 16+.

OK Boomer!- Different generations are able to compete against each other to come up with the correct answer. It's funny to see what the other players do and don't know about the others generation. Games listed suggested age 18+.

Taboo- Try and get your team to guess the word, but don't say the related words listed underneath. This game has always been a family favorite of my growing up. Games listed suggested age 13+.

5 Second Rule- You have 5 seconds to name 3 things from a revealed category, can you do it! The game of brain farts for me, but still so much fun to play! Games listed suggested age 10+.

Scattergories- Roll the die to reveal the letter and think of something that begins with that letter for every topic listed, but you are racing the clock. See who came up with he most answers for the win. I have always loved this quiet game, it was a favorite growing up. Games listed suggested age 13+.

SEQUENCE- A board game with cards and tokens. Place your tokens 1 at a time on the board based on the cards you hold in your hand and try to get 5 in a row. My husband and I love playing this quiet strategy game once the kids go to bed. Games listed suggested age 7+.

Apples to Apples- Pick the card from your hand that you think best describes the card picked by the judge, but also play the card you think the judge will like best. This game reveals who's minds think alike!  Games listed suggested age 12+.

Hearing Things- Are you good at reading lips? Try and read the lips of your partner as they read a card to you and you can't hear anything! This game is hilarious to play! Games listed suggested age 12+.
